The History of the Miracle Berry
Native to Africa’s Gold Coast, the Miracle Berry has been integral to the diet of tribes spread across modern day Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Nigeria. This miracle fruit was introduced to the Western world by the French explorer Chevalier des Marchais in 1725 and has fascinated scientists ever since.
How Your Tongue Tastes
Spread all over our tongues are taste buds with several different types of receptors. These receptors help us discriminate between sweet, sour, bitter, savory, and other tastes. So if, for example, you were to bite a lime, the acids in the lime would cause your sour receptors to send signals to your brain. Your brain would then interpret these signals as tasting something sour.
How Miracle Fruit Alters Taste
Miracle fruit contains a glycoprotein called Miraculin. (Really, that’s what it’s called). Miraculin binds to your tongue’s sweet receptors. The Miraculin found in mberry modifies the shape of your taste buds, confusing their recognition of sweet and sour.
You’ll achieve the best effects with sour, bitter, or acidic foods. Strawberries, Granny Smith apples, and hard cheeses are truly beautiful experiences. Lemon juice and vinegar will blow your mind.

HOW TO
Hacking Nature with Miracle Fruit
Place one tablet into mouth, dissolve tablet, gather food pairings, and enjoy foods!
Are mberry Miracle Fruit Tablets all natural?
Yes. They are 100% organic, 0 calories, and gluten free. The only ingredients are miracle fruit powder and corn starch (to bind it all together). There are approximately 3 miracle berries in one tablet.
Are mberry Miracle Fruit Tablets safe?
Of course. The miracle berry (Synsepalum Dulcificum) has been eaten for hundreds of years. There are no side effects and all regular effects fade after a short time.
What are the best foods to try it with?
Sour, bitter, and acidic foods seem to work the best: lemons, limes, oranges, strawberries, granny smith apples, & even vinegar. Mustard will taste like sweet honey mustard. There is a flyer that comes in each pack of mberry with a huge list of foods
What is flavor tripping?
Flavor tripping is just the hip term to describe how miracle berries change your tastes. Flavor tripping parties are where you gather some friends, some foods, and some miracle berries. The fun is seeing how your tastes have changed between people!
Why does mberry affect people differently?
All of our tongues are different and effects with mberry will vary from person to person as it is a natural substance. Similar to how cilantro can taste like soap to some people!

How to avoid wasting it?
You do have to let them dissolve in your mouth and swish the tablet or the saliva all around your tongue for best effect. Although a bit of effect can be noticed when chewing them up a bit, it's much better to let it soak in. It's like a little piece of somewhat sweet-and-sour compressed fruit candy so it doesn't take very long; maybe 30 to 60 seconds depending on how powerful your saliva system. The effect lasts between 30 minutes and a couple of hours, probably also depending on how powerful your saliva system.
What tastes are affected?
It's my understanding that the tablets affect only the taste of sour, changing it to sweet, but because a lot of foods have some amount of underlying sour, the foods affected are more broad than just sour. These tablets don't eliminate all bad tastes. You can still taste the nuances of food, good and bad, but it's like bad tastes don't matter as much...? I like a variety of sour and bitter tastes to begin with though, so maybe I'm biased.
What foods are affected?
The foods most affected tend to be sour, bitter, or mostly-sweet foods, while neutral and salty foods are less affected or unaffected. Purely sweet foods like candybars and marshmallows aren't affected much or at all, while foods that are more sweet than anything else, but not purely sweet are highly affected, such as sweet fruit -- because they also have slightly sour undertones for the tablets to work on making sweet into ultra-sweet. (The fruit we tried were naval oranges, blood oranges, grapefruit, mangoes, and apples, and that was true of all of them.) Beer and wine are highly affected. This could be a good way to enjoy beer and wine if you don't, but it could also be a good way to begin to appreciate what's good about beer or wine in the first place, and later to continue to appreciate it without the tablets! You see, enthusiasts of sour or bitter foods are often looking for subtle elements of taste within the overall sour or bitter flavor. With these tablets, you just might be able to find find that PART of the taste you like without being distracted by all the bitterness and sourness.
What kind of sweetness?
The sweetness that you taste instead of sour isn't a nondescript sweetness, but it's close. It's not nearly as distinctive as stevia, for example, but more distinctive than refined sugar. If you can taste the difference between cane sugar and beet sugar (most people can't), then you'll probably find these tablets' sweetness distinctive. On the other hand, if you can't taste the difference between sugar and high fructose corn syrup (most people can, I think), then different "kinds of sweetness" probably won't matter at all. I thought the miracle fruit taste was a nice hint of slightly tropical, slightly gamy, aromatic fruit, but one of the other two people I tried them with thought the slight gaminess was too much like overly ripe fruit, and therefore a little bit nauseating. She still uses the tablets more than I do though.
Most awesome foods to try?
Lemons! Grapefruit! Vinegar! Not many people are fully familiar with the taste of vinegar straight from the bottle. I recommend tasting vinegar before using the berries, then after. It's amazing! Looking forward to trying onions and pineapple! (Not at the same time.)
But watch out! These things taste different but they have the exact same ingredients as they do without the tablets, so they'll affect your stomach pretty much the same. Still, I wasn't hurt at all by half a shot glass of vinegar and a whole lemon. Speaking of having the same ingredients but tasting different, these could be used as quite an effective diet aid to cut down on excess calories and other harmful effects of refined sugar / high-fructose corn syrup.
As for the safety of "miracle berries" themselves (which is the important thing in these tablets) apparently they've been used for countless generations by people living where they grow.
I recommend getting a variety of foods for tasting before your first use. Super-fun!
Enjoy!
----- EDIT -----
We tried two other brands after this one.
- Red Box: The tablets this review is about are the "mberry" tablets in the red box.
- Green Box: "Miracle Fruit Tabs" in the pale green box with (Japanese? Chinese?) script. Looks same as ThinkGeek sells/sold.
- Yellow Box:"Miracle Frooties" XL size, in the yellow box with lemon and lime for the O's.
Here's how they compare:
Red Box: Most effective. (Most miracle fruit content.) Most gamy. Middle price. Overall good.
Yellow Box: Near to most effective. (Near to most miracle fruit content.) Least gamy. Lowest price. Overall best.
Green Box: Least effective. (Least miracle fruit content.) Near to most gamy. Highest price. Overall not so good.
I got my order today, was really hoping they would work, but was a little skeptical after reading some of the reviews, so I guess I was cautiously optimistic. I tried 1/2 a tablet, and a slice of lemon expecting it to , best case scenario taste "sweet-ish". Oh my gosh! The lemon tasted like a nice sweet lemonade, not "sweet-ish"--sweet. I was blown away. So I tried it with my pomegranate/aloe vera juice mix--amazing! The final test was my MSM/C mix which tastes very sour (from the vitamin C) and very bitter (from the MSM). I plan to start my day with the M-Berry tabs because they enable me to get those supplemenatal drinks down effortlessly. My husband has never heard of the miracle fruit, so I decided to do the lemon taste test with him, without telling him why I had him dissolve this 1/2 tablet on his tongue between his 2 lemon samples (I cut it in front of him and had him eat a piece before and after just so he could see that I had not added anything to the fruit. He was amazed as well. Had no clue why such a thing could be valuable, but at least I know it wasn't the placebo effect for me. I usually have challenges drinking enough water. I added some lemon to a bottle of water it tasted like lemonade. I am really excited.
Yes, the tablets are a little pricey as supplements go, but M-Berry's pricing is very competitive with other sellers out there, and now I know the quality is good, and I don't have to worry about perishability like I would with the actual fruit.
I will continue to buy them until my plant starts to fruit, and probably even after that just because they are so portable. I think they're great.
It's a fun little thing to try, but I don't think I'd ever do it again. Very much a fun little activity to try out. Your mileage may vary though.
Top reviews from other countries
Only cons are , it takes time till it dissolve , and a bit 2 expensive.
But it is fun to try lemon hot sauce and all different kinds of food.
That being said, they work best with fruits and vegetables. Citric acids work well. Doesn’t work on vinegar based foods (like the real fruit). Tip: while the tablet melts on your tongue, move it around so it touches every surface of it (tip, sides, middle). Anywhere the tablet touches, it will trick the tastebuds there. Eat the fruit first as a baseline before the tablet.
Favorite fruits with this: strawberries (it tastes like jam), blackberries (like candy), pineapple and grapes (just makes them so delicious), ofcourse limes/lemons for the novelty, and surprisingly…cherry tomatoes are incredible.
OH if you squeeze some orange juice into soda, it tastes like Orange Crush!
So far limes are amazing, lemons are great, too. Raspberries and strawberries are awesome. And this year’s crop of clementines have been so sour and gross and this miracle stuff has made them taste great.
