Philips Vision LED: FAQ

What is the difference between Philips Vision LED and other LEDs?

Its groundbreaking design is what makes Vision LED stand out. Light output of an LED bulb is not necessarily related to the number of LEDs mounted on the bulb, but it is all about filament position. By mounting the LEDs in filament position, we get the maximum light output on where it needs to be, on the road. This filament position allows us to meet the light output of an incandescent bulb, thus make them street-legal. In addition, due to its design, the LEDs are extremely robust and shock- and moisture proof and capable of handling voltage surges without failure.

My LED doesn't light up after installation. Why does this happen and how can I solve this?

If your LED doesn't light up, its likely that you need to flip the LED.

Why does this happen?

Regular incandescent bulbs can draw current in either direction, there are no 'positive' or 'negative' sides on the bulb. The bulb will work regardless of which direction it is inserted. LED bulbs, however, only draw current in one direction. Basically, this situation can be compared to batteries that have a positive and negative side. So if the LEDs are inserted incorrectly, they will not work. The solution is to simply flip the LED!

Follow these steps to reverse the polarity:

1. Remove the LED from the socket.

2. Flip the LED.

3. Insert LED back into the socket.

4. Check to ensure the LED lights up.

After installation: I notice fast flash or dashboard errors about a failing bulb. What should I do?

Error messages appear because the LED bulb wattage is much lower than conventional bulbs, which can make an outage warning system unable to detect the bulb.

If your car has a dashboard error message, experiences fast flash or goes in limp mode upon installation of an LED bulb, you may consider to purchase and install a Philips Vision LED CAN-bus warning canceller solution.

The 5W CAN-bus is used for interior applications, and license plate lighting. The 21W CAN-bus is used for exterior applications.

Well designed, quality bulb that does a great job!
4 Stars
Well designed, quality bulb that does a great job!
Let me state that although I don't consider myself an expert, I do have an engineering degree and electronics background as well as over two decades of experience with automotive service and repair- especially with automotive electrical and lighting systems. Installation was on a 2009 Buick Enclave CXL in the rear tail lights, which are a combination Stop/Turn/Tail (one bulb performs all three functions).Overall, they seem to be a well designed and engineered bulb that nearly duplicates the look of the OEM incandescent bulb. The Enclave is an excellent test of this because one of the questions I (and others) have asked is "why would a $40k+ luxury vehicle built in 2009 not have LED tail lights?" And although I don't agree with it (I chalk it up to cutting costs instead of aesthetics), GM's explanation was something like "we wanted to create a jewel-like look to both the headlights and tail lights which was best achieved with an incandescent bulb and highly segmented reflector design". Anyways, the Enclave tail light requires good rearward light dispersion to fill out the reflector properly and achieve the look and performance that the engineers intended. But back to the bulb- in case you haven't noticed, it's designed to fire to the rear and sides- there are no forward facing LEDs. As far as I can tell, it works pretty well and frankly most of the light from an incandescent that escapes the housing comes from the reflector anyways, so you shouldn't notice much (if any) difference. There is however a subtle "dead spot" at both side edges of the bulb (see photo). I'm pretty picky, but it wasn't enough for me to take them out and unless you were looking for it, I doubt you'd even notice. Bear in mind that although most tail light housings are designed with a horizontally-mounted bulb (like the Enclave), there are some designs where the bulb stands vertically or even diagonally (like my old Saturn coupe) and this bulb may perform differently in those designs.Electrically, the bulb draws about 200mA (or 0.2A) at full intensity (I didn't measure the current draw for the parking light mode) when measured at a nominal 14.4VDC (which is a rough average operating voltage for most vehicles when the engine is running). As the voltage increases, the current draw for this bulb increases as well and at lower voltages (such as around 12.2V with the engine off) it is lower- closer to 150mA. As the bulb heats up, the current draw remains stable and the light output shows little no variation in intensity and/or color. To me, this indicates that Phillips built this bulb with a good thermal design, quality driver circuitry and high quality LED emitters- the 12 year warranty also seems to back that up (time will tell though). I have several other "high output" LED bulbs I've bought on Amazon, eBay, and even dedicated LED websites and most of them tend to start out great, but quickly diminish in light output (and current draw) and even tend to shift color considerably when run at full power for more than a few minutes. They bounce back after cooling down, but as we all know that's not acceptable performance on a vehicle (especially for parking and brake lights which are often run at 100% duty cycle for long periods of time). As you'll see in the pictures, it looks like the LED bulb is not as bright and more "orange" than the incandescent, but that's largely due to the camera (iPhone) and the fact that the LED bulb is emitting a very narrow spectrum of red color whereas the incandescent is producing the full visible spectrum (aka "white") and both are passing through a red filter (the lens). The camera is automatically adjusting brightness, exposure, contrast, white balance, etc. based on what it's detecting in the photo thereby causing the results you see (that's my theory anyways). Rest assured that the brightness is very close to the incandescent and the color is pretty much the same (after all, the red lens filters out most all other colors anyways).Important info:-If used in a turn signal or combination brake/turn application (like my vehicle), you will need to either use "load resistors" in parallel with each bulb or swap out your flasher module for one designed to work with LEDs or else it will trip the bulb outage "hyper-flash". My car (and I suspect a lot of newer cars) has the flasher circuitry built into the BCM computer so it is not replaceable and you must use the resistors. The OEM incandescent bulb draws about 2A at full intensity compared to the 0.2A this bulb draws and I've found that my vehicle requires about 1.5A of current draw to satisfy the computer.-These bulbs are polarity sensitive, so if it doesn't work at first, reverse the bulb in the socket and test again.-If you live where snow and ice are possible, there is a drawback to LED bulbs in that they don't produce nearly as much heat as incandescent bulbs. In most cases, this heat is wasted energy and not particularly useful but when snow and ice buid up on the lens it's actually a useful side effect. Most of us don't think about this since 99% of vehicles (until recently) have had all incandescent bulbs for head/tail lights (or HID/arc bulbs for headlights, which also produce a good amount of heat) so there's been no reason to even think about it.Other thoughts:I experienced a similar issue to another reviewer- one of the bulbs worked fine on both parking and brake/turn, but the other only worked as a parking light. I swapped sides to confirm that it wasn't the socket and the issue followed the bulb. I ordered another set and was ready to submit a return request when I decided to test the bulbs on my test bench. Low and behold, both bulbs worked! So I went back to my car and tried again- same issue. I continued to troubleshoot and found that if I moved the bulb around, it would intermittently make contact and work (bear in mind that the other bulb worked fine in either socket without any wiggling). So I cleaned the contacts on both the socket and the bulb and reliability improved. I then went back in this afternoon and bent the contacts inside the bulb socket on the vehicle towards the center so that they would make better contact with the bulb and it seems to have resolved the issue completely (only put them in last night, so time will tell). So it's likely a combination of manufacturing variances and the fact that OEM sockets, after years and years of use (especially with the heat generated by incandescent bulbs), tend to have their metal contacts settle in place, which can cause some connection issues (especially if the replacement bulb is not as thick as the bulb it replaced). It may not be the same issue as the OP, but the fact that we both had one that worked and one that didn't doesn't seem like a coincidence.Still a good product though- much better engineering and design than 98% of the other LED bulbs out there.
