Product Description
The battery that you can type on. Power Cover boosts the battery life in your Surface 2, Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2, so you can work straight through that jam-packed meeting schedule or the entire flight. Power Cover has all the standard features of a classic QWERTY keyboard with mechanical keys for speed and accuracy. Here’s how to charge your Power Cover: Step 1: The first time you charge your Power Cover, remove the warning label from the power connector. Step 2: Attach the Power Cover to your Surface Pro or Surface Pro 2. The Cover magnetically attaches to your Surface—just bring the two close together. When the Cover gets close, it aligns and snaps into place. Step 3: Charge your Surface and Power Cover. Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet or power strip. Connect the power connector to the charging port on your Surface. The connector clicks into place (either direction works). When the small light on the connector is lit, it means your Surface is getting power. How quickly your Power Cover charges depends on the battery level on your Surface and how you’re using your Surface at the time.

When the Power Cover was announced I knew I'd have to pick it up and after using it for a week I know it was a more than worthwhile investment. I regularly get around 14 hours of battery life when using One Note, Word, and the browser for my classes, but that IS using Power Saving mode and a low brightness setting. I get about 9 hours when using Netflix or watching movies, and around 10-11 hours using Marvel Unlimited's app. All these make a hell of a boost in the longevity of the battery. I don't feel like I have to be attached at the hip to a power socket anymore and don't worry about my Surface die-ing on me in the middle of classes.
My first impression of the Power Cover was that it felt very nice in my hands. It has a felt-like bottom that translates over to the touchpad and mouse buttons (no worries about scratches on it!) and Cover itself is on the light side. I'm surprised that it isn't heavier since it's an attachable battery but I won't complain about it! It flips and folds around the Surface very easily and doesn't ever feel like it's going to slip out of it's "locked in" position. Once the magnets click in, this sucker doesn't want to move.
It's feels nice to type on, but those who aren't used to smaller keyboards may have a bit of a tricky time adjusting to it. My home computer and old laptop have very wide keyboards so it took a couple days to be able to type easily on the Power Cover without hitting all sorts of keys I didn't want. The keys themselves are very responsive and barely take any pressure to use. I'm a bit miffed about there being no backlight, but it isn't a huge deal. Overall the Cover feels sturdy and very responsive.
The touchpad is on the smaller side compared to what I'm used to and the clickers definitely take some getting used to. You have to push down in the right spot to get them to actually select what you want which can be a little frustrating but the Surface will give you a nice little "boop" when it's clicked to let you know it's working. I don't see it being as tricky to use after using the Cover for a longer time, but there is a bit of an adjustment period for it.
The Power Cover really makes my Surface Pro into the beast it can really be. It's a pleasure to type on, more than doubles my battery, and just looks gorgeous. If you're even slightly considering buying this, just do it.
I bought this for my surface pro 2. Immediately upon connecting it, my surface requested a software update and restart. After that, the 2nd battery was detected as empty. I started to charge my tablet (it was around 80%) - but when it got to 100%, the 2nd battery for this keyboard immediately and instantly shot to 100%. I thought "Oh, the battery was already charged and woke up". But unfortunately - when I put my tablet to sleep and woke it up an hour later, the 2nd battery again registered zero per cent. I connected my power cable to the surface, and again - the second battery immediately registers 100%.
Borrowing suggestions from others - I've tried disconnecting the keyboard 2 dozen times. From the point both batteries register 100% - I've drained my surface pro completely in one sitting, but still it never charges from the keyboard dock. I've done a lifing test to ensure I'm not actually getting better battery life from the 2nd battery (in the hopes that it was just not reading correctly) - but I still get no better than 5 hours of movie streaming.
At this point, I figure the battery has been dead for so long it won't wake up. Another possibility is that the drivers in Windows 10 don't work, I never tried this keyboard using Windows 8.1.
Unless anyone has any other ideas about how to revive the battery in this dock - I'm going to have to return it. Which is a shame, since it seems like a great bargain for a great product.
UPDATE
I'm leaving my original review up top so people can see what I tried. But surprisingly, the battery in my cover woke up after a week of use. I was going to ship it back the next day, but noticed my battery meter registering 98% for the second battery. Not zero or 100%. The surface pro was actually draining the keyboard battery now. I then did the same streaming video tests to compare battery life. Without the power cover I get 5 hours of HD movie streaming from my NAS. With the cover I get 8.5. That's great for me - I'm going to keep it unless it suddenly fails again. But I waited to revise my review until 2 days of video and gaming had proven that this is functioning right. Good luck. I just recommend leaving yours connected and charging them together until the 2nd battery starts working.
It's fine to use this cover connected to the tablet around the house, closed like a laptop. But don't pack it in a sleeve or a bag for travel this way. Mine left a permanent scratch on my screen protector in the shape of the lip of Micro fiber material. When I travel with this, I will separate the 2 in the future.
Update May 2016. This worked well until Windows 10 and Office 2016. For some reason Microsoft can't get their hardware to work correctly with their software. This will all of a sudden stop working. Mostly when using Excel, Internet Explorer, or other MS products. To get it to work when it locks up, you have to undock it, wait a few seconds, and then dock it again. If it locks up while in excel, you will need to shut down your computer to get it to work again. Meanwhile Excel tends to lock up at the same time, so you lose whatever you were working on. Sometimes, it will save an interim copy, but not always. I just don't use this anymore. I purchased a bluetooth keyboard, which will dock with my Surface Pro 3. The battery was a great feature, but the headaches the combinations cause are not worth it. I've tried all of the "fixes" which MS has suggested - they really don't work. Just save yourself the headaches. Don't buy this.
