Already replaced the Type Y filter bag, and washed/dried secondary filter at bottom of Y bag compartment. Purchased a new Hoover roller brush belt part no 38528033 from HDepot $3 including free delivery containing two Hoover branded belts in a Hoover plastic bag with Hoover logo and marked 160 that are wide and thick for our green Hoover Model U5454-900 upright vacuum cleaner, Supreme Wind Tunnel, $190 from Sears in 2002. (Don't you love the 2 or 3 numbers for a Hoover part ?)
When removing old roller brush, also pull out its plastic cavity that was loosened when the 4 screws removed, and discover trapped dense lint to clean out. Vacuuming wonderfully on day one of ownership; our dark colored rug looked noticeably good vacuumed, wow. As one reviewer observed, he felt he had a refreshed Hoover vacuum cleaner, and so do I. And so for many of us, we really need to pay attention to the roller brush and belts more frequently than years, well, this may be the U5454-900's last years.
fyi, so we replaced our Eureka vacs around year 2000 with 3-Hoover vacs, but one Hoover vac motor exploded Dec 2022 after 20 years with a loud bam which also warped the head between the rear wheels, and that got us to check the other two old Hoovers.
Disappointed that one of our two remaining working Hoover vacuums also has to be disposed of at some point only because of no more reliable replacement parts, ie roller brush and belts. In searching for a new replacement vac for the one whose motor exploded, we found a bagged upright Kenmore Elite vac model 2031150 with a motorized roller head that uses no belts, very nice and low noise, and welcomed its new tech, expensive $300 from Amazon; like it so far. Websites evaluating many upright vacs, bagged and unbagged, and CReports helped us to decide, and the better choices became actually small.
It was the end pieces that kind of came out from the inside assembly and they didn't turn smooth anymore.
It took some research to get just the right one for my Windtunnel as there are so many different models.
I suggest to go to the Hoover website and pick your model number and then write down the number of the proper agitator.
As to the agitator itself? Yes its wood. It does not look like the picture, but I expected that, reading the other reviews. I could not find the plastic one anywhere and even on Hoover's website they are out of stock.
It looks and feels very solid and the ends turn very smooth. I think that was the part I was worried about. So it seems to be well made, even if it isn't like the picture.
It fit like a glove though and turns fine and it isn't as loud anymore. My Windtunnel has always been loud somewhat.
I can't speak to the longevity as I just put it in. I went around the House and it grooms the carpet fine so we'll see.
One thing I did notice is that hair didn't wrap itself around the brush so desperately as it did with the plastic one. I have very long hair and its always a pain. I think because its not twisted and the way the bristles are made, its seems a bit easier to get the hair off.
My Hoover Windtunnel is the 5750-900.
eta: I just noticed that the picture showing now is the right product. When I ordered it showed the plastic one, now it shows the wood, which is what you get.
edited August 2012:
I am still using the same vacuum with this same agitator. Still going. I just keep changing out the belts.
We have had this vacuum for years and it was starting to smell when used. I decided to take it apart to clean it. I followed the manual directions and it was very easy to do although time consuming because there was so much old dust trapped in crevices. Once I removed the beater bar parts, I could clean out the accumulated dirt and dust. I also washed out the hoses, washed the filters and changed the bag. The manual showed how to measure the length of the bristles to know if they were worn out. It had never entered into my mind to look for that. Once I determined that the bristles were in fact worn down, I found the parts on Amazon and am very happy that the vacuum was so easy to refurbish and I did not have to buy a new vacuum.
