I didn't have a table large enough for cutting the film, so I used the cardboard shipping box. Flattened out on the floor, it worked quite well for cutting and spraying the film. I did try reverse rolling the film in an attempt to uncurl it, but I think it's a waste of time, and it increases the chances of damaging the film.
I cleaned each window pane thoroughly. First, I cleaned it with window cleaner, then shaved the surface with a single-edge razor blade, cleaned again with window cleaner, and lastly with the Gila solution.
I cut the film ½" larger than each window pane, and then I laid it clear (convex) side up on the cardboard sheet. With a small piece of tape on both sides of one corner, I separated the clear liner from the sheet of film.
Here's the most important step: As I separated the liner from the film, I kept spraying it with the Gila solution. This helps keep the film flat, reduces static cling, and it also enables you to unstick it from itself if it does curl together. Once the liner is completely removed, the film is well-coated with the spray. The instructions also recommended spraying the outside of the film, but I did not do this.
Leaving the wet film on the cutting surface, I then sprayed the window with the solution until it was completely wet but not quite running down the pane. Now I picked the film up and applied it to the window pane. The wet film clings to the wet window; it can be slid into position or lifted and repositioned. The larger pieces of film can curl inward and stick to itself, but since it's so wet, it can be uncurled gently without damaging it.
The next step is to squeegee the excess liquid out to the edges. I used the little plastic squeegee from the Gila Installation kit with a layer of cloth wrapped around it. Start from the center and work to the outsides, gently pushing the excess liquid and any air bubbles to the edges. Trim the excess film at the edges with a very sharp utility blade.
Even though I smoothed each section of film very well, the visibility through the pane was wavy, and it worsened over the next hour until it was stippled all over. This is temporary. The remaining liquid evaporates over the next 24 hours; the film becomes very smooth, and the visibility returns to normal.
One of the rolls I ordered did arrive slightly damaged, and the roll was visibly wrinkled near one end. It wasn't worth the hassle of returning it, and as it turned out, it didn't affect the final result. Once the liner was removed, the wrinkling wasn't visible on the film, and there is no sign of it in the completed installation.
I'm very pleased with the final result. The interior is slightly darkened as on an overcast day. My house seems cooler, and I expect my summer cooling costs will be lower than in previous years.
Cons:
- You need two people to install: I tried it myself and put kinks/lines in the sheet (which you can't iron out, pretty much rendered useless after that).
- It is SUPER delicate: It doesn't come wrapped around a cardboard tube so you really need to be super careful. It can't be windy inside and you also need a work space large enough to house working with this on a flat surface. Our kitchen table barely did the job in not letting it get ruined.
- You really need the installation kit: This comes with the spray, the yellow blade squeegee doohickey to get bubbles out and a razor tool to cut around the window when your done. I don't think honestly you can get away with not using this it is immensely helpful and saved a ton of time and effort.
Pros:
- It is seriously amazing: It has been on the window for less than 6 hours and I love it already- so much cooler and the sun is not blinding (and its also saving my interiors...)
- Price: For the price you cannot beat it (yes, it is pretty hard to get the swing of installing it, but once it is up you can sigh with relief)
- Helpful videos on Gila website: I watched 'Todd' install these and it walked us through every step of the process. Made it so much easier...
I only gave it 4 stars because they seriously need to include a cardboard tube with the product to help it not get totally kinked and ruined. Oh and 'Todd' did this by himself, but again you need two people (especially if you have big windows!).
Top reviews from other countries
This was my first time ordering this product and I would be doing the installation myself. I read a lot of the reviews and decided to place an order for the 3-in-one Gila Heat Control window film. It blocks 59% of the sun's heat and glare, and 99% of the UV rays that causes fading of furniture and photographs. This product, combined with light blocking drapes (I already had these), has been a game changer for me and the air conditioner!
The instructions said the film was to be applied to the inside panes. I had 4 windows, each with 3 panes and varying widths. I had some apprehension about the installation because I'm not the most patient person. But I think my desparation motivated me to try harder.
I read and followed the enclosed instructions and over a two day period, I completed the job!
Here's what I learned.
1. Wash the window surface! It is important that there is no lint or dirt on the surface as it will not give you the desired results.
2. You don't need to order the installation kit. You likely have most of the tools at home or they can be easily and more cheaply purchased.
3. 710 ml spray bottle purchased from the Dollar Store. Fill with water and a good squirt of dish soap. The soap creates the slipperyness needed to move the film into position.
4. Measuring tape and small retractable knife. I already had these.
5. An 8 inch plastic wallpaper smoother purchased at Home Depot for $6.95 and a credit card sized piece of hard plastic. You can use one of those rewards cards every store issues these days . Both are used to push the water solution out between the film and the window pane. One to remove the bulk of the water solution and one for the final details. Use clean microfiber clothes to absorb the water.
6. Work out the large air bubbles but don't become obsessed with the tiny ones. There will always be some you can't get. The bubbles will disappear after a day or so when the sun hits it.
7. All work was completed on a rectangular folding table in my living room.
8. Please keep in mind that your experience will be different if you are doing a door or large windows that can't be removed. I found some good YouTube videos showing how that can be accomplished.
There you have it. I'm so grateful to have found a great product that provided an effective and affordable solution to my problem.
I had some film left over so applied a second layer to the lower 12 inches of the sliding door to provide extra protection to the portion of the rug not shaded by the floor-length sheers. I still had film left over so applied a third layer to the lower 9 inches and spliced in an additional 4 inches to the top of the second layer extending it to 16 inches. The shade progression looks great on the window and provides extra protection to the rug by the window where it is not shaded by the sheers. Note to self: splicing over an underlying layer is not as effective as splicing only a single layer as can be seen in the photo. This is because if the knife cuts through the underlying film the cut cannot be closed because the underlying film will no longer move. A 1/4 inch strip of the left hand edge of the right window was spliced into the base layer to remove a ragged edge from cutting with a dull knife and without wetting. The splice is joined and almost invisible. The splice does not show at all in the photo. Compare to the spliced 4 inches at top of the bottom second layer. Sections of the splice where the knife went through the underlying film are visible. Overall I am very pleased with the Gila UV and IR window film.

However when I installed and found out the length was much shorter, 4fee x 15feet was what it should be, but the used one only 4ft x 7ft, I believe it's because the last buyer used up 8 feet and returned to Amazon, and QA of Amazon didn't verify the returned film then just repackaged and re-sell.
After checked with Amazon, I have to communicate with the manufacture, I've received 3ft x 6.5ft as compensation, I know it's not manufacture's fault. and I will not purchase ANY USED one.
