About us
Allen Sports has been trusted by outdoor enthusiasts. Allen began his career working on aerospace technology for the Apollo program, until government cutbacks eliminated his job in 1967. That’s when the Harvard-trained physicist embarked on a new mission, transforming his hobby into a brand new industry. A cycling enthusiast and inventor, Allen wanted a way to carry bikes on his car for weekend trips around New England with his family. He was tired of hassling with twine and dinging up his car, so he set out to create a better solution - not only for himself, but also for the growing market he foresaw.
Product Description

Allen's new dual-compound cradle system securely holds your bicycles in place and the rack's large padded spine shield protects your bicycles as well. The powder-coated rack installs in just minutes with a no-wobble bolt and an integrated locking loop offers a great place to secure your bikes.

We needed a 2" hitch mount bike rack for our 4 different vehicles. With 4 bikes, tray style racks would add to much rear length, weight and expense. So hanging style was the only option which had more ground clearance too. The RV with larger rear spare tire mount was the hardest to find a fit for.
Other Thule & Yakima expensive $500+ models didn't have enough clearance, even the swing out units I tried. Searching online trusting Amazon & it's customer reviews, we took a chance and its perfect for our family of 4 bikes. My mountain bike & my wife's both don't have straight top frame tubes but still fit fine not needing any "special $100 adapter tube" like other brands require. Even my kid's single wheel tow bike I got to mount on!
Considering the simplicity of the rack and tie down rubber straps, you do have to add your own additional bungee cords, foam noodles or towels etc. to further secure all the bikes, forks, pedals, tires from swinging too much or banging into each other. But this is no different than any other hanging style bike rack I've researched and even tested on floor models. The quality is built solid and very simple design makes it easy to use, mount and remove. Great value for the price and ability to use with larger rear mounted spare tires.
Obviously per its design it doesn't swing out for side opening rear trunks. Check Allen Sports models to make sure you order the right unit and check measurements.
Only concern with anti-wobble bolt on hitch connection, there's no hitch pin to use a locking pin? So add a cable from the rack to the hitch chain eye on either side?
Will update soon after a few long road trips with the RV.

Overall I was disappointed with the quality of the product. Several areas were scuffed/scratched already showing bare metal and one of the rubber straps was already damaged (one small tear that may completely split if stretched enough). The rubber protector -with the ALLEN logo came loose in the box -so I had to glue it back. I am afraid this product "requires some assembly" beyond installation.
I used a Class III receiver from CURT and noticed that the "Heininger 6011 Advantage SportsRack 2" Receiver Trailer Hitch Lock" does NOT work with this rack as the receiver diameter is smaller than the hitch's one - this is the "brilliant" no-wobble design from ALLEN.
Fortunately the CURT received and this ALLEN rack both have welded metal loops so I secured the rack and the bikes with a "Kryptonite 720018210610 KryptoFlex 3/8" x 7' 1007 Double Loop Security Cable".
I will not recommend this product to anyone and would look for better quality elsewhere.

The rack is great, highly recommended for anyone with a spare tyre on the back of their car like my Defender.
Now for the “not so great” bit. The rack arrived with a snapped plastic spine protector. I contacted the seller and Allen customer services. I’ve yet to receive a reply from the seller but Allen did reply. After sending them photos of the broken item and a copy of the receipt they offered to replace the $2 piece of plastic (which they will sell you for $15.60 from their online store) for free, nice, Thankyou Allen. However in the next sentence they informed me that postage for this small, very light piece of plastic would “run around $100-$150”...Thats US dollars. At the current exchange rate that’s between $130 to $196 Australian.
As I already said, I can buy this piece of plastic from their online store for $15.60 and they will charge me $40 Postage. So that’s $56.50 to buy a new one (which I shouldn’t have to do because it was broken when opened) or $150 for a FREE one.
To put this in perspective I paid $344 Australian for the rack delivered from the US to Australia. It weighs a ton. Allen want to charge me nearly 2/3rds of the cost of the rack to send me a FREE piece of plastic that weighs the same as a bar of chocolate.
